- ABOUT US -

Stowe Rescue Squad continued its mission of providing emergency medical services to the Town of Stowe in a proud and professional manner during 2007.
Activity: Stowe Rescue Squad (SRS) responded to 643 calls during FY 2007. Of those responses, 433 patients were transported to the hospital. Approximately 52% of those calls were provided with Advanced Life Support medical care during transport. Billable income collected from these calls totaled $194,471, up over $27,000 from the previous year, and was deposited into the town’s general fund.
In FY2007 the department placed in service a new response vehicle “ALS-1”, which has significantly reduced response times for our highest trained personnel. Purchased as a retired Stowe police cruiser, the vehicle was put into service in large part through community donations to the volunteer organization. Typically, this is manned by one of our paramedics during daytime hours and is equipped with Advanced Life Support equipment including a defibrillator, oxygen, advanced airway equipment, IV supplies, and medications. Also, we purchased our first powered ambulance stretcher which attributes to significantly reducing back injuries to EMT’s when lifting patients.
This fiscal year we expanded our paramedic coverage by an additional 24 hours of daytime coverage using paid staff to better achieve our goal of eventually providing around-the-clock paramedic coverage within the town. Paramedic level service is recognized as being the standard of care for Emergency Medical Services in most communities.
Membership: The service is still comprised primarily of volunteers and currently has 2 volunteer paramedics, one paid part-time paramedic (24 hours) and 1 paid full time Director who is also a paramedic. There are 14 EMT-Intermediates (one paid full time), 15 EMT basics, and 3 CPR certified drivers, for a total of 34 volunteers.
Certification: All members hold current American Heart Association certification in CPR. Emergency Medical Technicians (EMT’s) are certified through the State of Vermont’s Department of Health. Paramedics are Nationally Registered and Vermont certified and hold certification in Advanced Cardiac Life Support and Pediatric Advanced Life Support. All certifications are valid for two years and must be renewed through continued education and testing. Two volunteers are currently attending Paramedic School. Four EMT basics upgraded to the Intermediate level.
Future Plans: SRS continues its quest to provide the best available emergency medical care to the community. In doing so, future planning involves expanding our availability of paramedic providers to ensure that the highest level of medical care is available in a timely manner to those in need. Plans are in motion to provide direct transport to Fletcher Allen Community Hospital in Burlington for patients presenting with specific cardiac related problems. As we endeavor to provide more information to support our need for a new building, we hope that the Stowe community supports us in our quest.
